I visited Atlanta with my sister last month and did my best to rockhound a little! I cut two rocks I brought home, a piece of quartz and a siltstone or poorly mineralized wood. The Chestatee river in Dahlonega Georgia was one of our random stops. We had wonderful food at Mary Mac’s in Atlanta and Old South BBQ in Smyrna.

Hi everybody it’s me Betty Let’s cut open this chicken nugget and talk about my trip to Georgia It’s not chicken It’s a piece of quartz I picked up outside of Dahlonega Georgia on the Chestatee River Both of these rocks are from the spot where there were snake warning signs and I had to talk my sister into going down to the river with me We didn’t see any snakes but I don’t think you’d see them I mean that’s part of the problem They just blend in
perfectly I thought this piece of quartz might have something more interesting inside of it but you know it it didn’t It’s just a piece of quartz It’s pretty though Sort of looks like a set of angel wings Quartz is the state gem of Georgia so I had to bring a little piece home
This wasn’t really a rockhounding trip I just did my best to do a little rockhounding while I was there When we got to Atlanta our first stop was Mary Mac’s I had chicken fried chicken and some collard greens It was delicious The next morning we felt like we really needed to burn some of that off so we decided to hike Stone Mountain
Stone Mountain is the most visited tourist attraction in Georgia and is the world’s largest exposed granite outcrop The whole thing is just granite It takes about an hour to get to the top It’s pretty steep Stone Mountain Park is really huge There’s a ton of different things you can do here but we were just here to do the trail and check out the
granite I tried my hardest to find anything that was not granite I found some chunks of mica and some seams that were filled with quartz but that’s it This whole thing is granite This is a really nice chance to get some exercise And the views from the top are absolutely
beautiful There’s a lot more to Stone Mountain Park than what I saw and what I’ve shown you But I’m kind of grateful that this was the side that I saw From Stone Mountain we went and visited family in Roswell We sorted through old records cataloged them for sale and I even took three home America Paul Simon and Led
Zeppelin We stopped into Wolf Mountain Vineyard and did a quick wine tasting It’s not as good as Oregon wine but it was pretty good This is what the gravel bed at the Chestatee River looked like Really different than what I’m used
to I really liked it here by the river I wanted to go through all of these rocks but we didn’t have very much time and we were really hungry
So I got my feet wet I had to fly home with wet shoes because of this river but it was beautiful We spent some time debating where our last meal in Georgia was going to be We knew it was going to be barbecue We settled on Old South Barbecue the oldest restaurant in Smyrna Georgia It was delicious I am still thinking about that pulled pork sandwich and those hush
puppies After lunch we still had a little bit of extra time so I dragged my sister around to a couple different parks walking around looking for rocks Here’s another one that I brought home I thought it looked like petrified wood I’m still not sure what this is but it’s pretty interesting on the inside Let’s take a look
If I get a chance to rockhound in Georgia again I would definitely try to go to one of the mines and dig for quartz crystals If you’re familiar with Georgia rocks let me know what you think this
is I took a couple photos of these and posted them here at the end of the video This rock is full of layers It has healed fractures Lots of different colors But is it wood What do you think Thank you for watching my video If you aren’t subscribed please consider subscribing I can’t wait to cut the next rock See you soon
