Cutting my sixth rock on the 10 inch lapidary saw! Is it petrified wood? Very dark, carbon or iron.

I cut my sixth rock on my 10 inch lapidary saw, a very dark rock I picked up on the Washougal River. Is it petrified wood? The fractured pieces have a reddish layer that looks like it could be iron.

Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Betty. This is my sixth rock. I picked this rock up on the Washougal River. I can’t tell for sure if this is petrified wood because it’s so dark.

So let’s cut it open. I messed up while I was cutting this rock. I twisted it towards the saw blade for some reason, probably impatience, and I had to back out of the cut. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I asked Missy Elliott. Based solely on her recommendations, I put the rock down, flipped it, and reversed it.

So far, each one of these rocks has been beautiful, and each one of these rocks has been a learning experience. It wasn’t elegant, but I did eventually hack off the end of the rock. The inside of the rock was revealed. It’s beautiful, dark, petrified wood. I cut the end piece in half to try to see more of the detail inside.

I wasn’t able to polish this rock to be able to show it in its full glory. I’m going to make sure it gets fully polished, and I’ll show you in an update soon. The inside of this rock is so dark that it’s really hard to get it to show up. And since it’s not polished yet, these photos are the best I could do for now. The fractured pieces of rock have a layer on them.

It’s reddish, and it looks like it could be iron. I know the rock looks really dark. I hope you can see some of the wood detail there. I can’t wait to show it to you once I get it polished up. Here are a couple pictures of the inside of the rock.

I can’t wait to cut the next rock. See you next time.
